What's your problem? Boris Johnson's Lockdown Speech

So following on from Boris Johnson's speech yesterday there seems to be 3 common reactions

  1. People saying they don't understand the change, or that it reverses the lockdown.
  2. Aggressive support for the government that insults anyone who says they don't understand the new terms.

  3. That the terms are unclear, and that the ambiguity caused may lead to an increase in cases.

Whilst I don't think that it reverses the lockdown (and perhaps people mean it may reverse all of the good the lockdown as done), my problem with this is the following

  • The new terminology is ambiguous, you cannot be alert for something that you cannot see and the government is not on top of testing. Personally I feel that the new terminology has been brought in simply because the Government feels they've over scared the population and want to start winding that back ready for a return to work and the government wanted to throw some good news to the public to avoid defeatism.

  • There was talk of returning to work for people on Monday morning, the announcement being made directly to workers on Sunday night. This is ridiculous and could easily be avoided with a message like "Employers shall be contacting employees this week to discuss their preparedness and plans for a possible return to work".

  • The government's guidelines on safety at work are incomplete, the section on PPE in the workplace hasn't been written.

  • Public transport is not prepared for people to return to work.

  • What is "actively encouraging" people to return to work?

  • We don't know the effectiveness of masks, and the message on them is confused. There's no supply chain for masks.

  • The supply chain issue for PPE for the NHS is still not resolved

  • Stores do not have basic entry requirements masks / hand sanitizer on the door etc. This should be mandatory. If there is no supply for sanitizer still I don't know what the government has been doing for the last 3 months.

  • Previously the message on exercise was 30 minutes locally to you, then home. Now you are able to drive places for exercise with no time limit. The risk is returning to the situation where large groups of people travel to beauty spots, or hike through public rights of way through farm land. This needs clarification before you mention it's ok.

  • People have been told they can go to parks and sit down. But then presumably they can then take food and drink with them. They are also able to meet with family members outside of their household as long as social distancing is observed. I find this very unlikely to be maintained, seeing a family member you haven't seen for 2 months and staying 2m apart seems unlikely.

  • If the police aren't clear on lockdown and are applying the rules differently, then the public can't be sure either.
  • Increased fines on people breaching lockdown rules, but with parks open and people sat around in the sun how will this be policed in a crowded park. If someone comes and sits too near you, can you receive a fine? Having reported people for breaking the lockdown the police do not follow up on it.

  • There is finally talk of lockdown on entry to the country, but then how is this enforced? How do people returning home survive for 14 days when they're unable to leave to buy food? Should they be prioritized for home delivery services?

And finally are staying that these are guidelines and that the British public should use common sense. If that is the case we firstly wouldn't have seen the issues we had previously such as huge crowds on Snowdon, and secondly it absolves the Government of all responsibility really leaving them with just just flipping a single switch that says stay home / start work.

The whole role of government is to work out the nuanced rules for a myriad of scenarios.
